Gothic Text Generator
Type above and the box fills with blackletter as you go. Unicode does not call this alphabet Gothic. It calls it Fraktur, and five of its capitals are borrowed from somewhere else entirely.
These are characters, not formatting, which is why they survive a paste into a bio. It is also why a screen reader will not read them as ordinary letters, and why some sites refuse them in a name field.
These are characters, not a font
Nothing here changes a typeface. Each letter above is a separate Unicode character that happens to be drawn in blackletter, which is why it survives a paste into a bio that carries no formatting. It is also why a screen reader announces MATHEMATICAL FRAKTUR CAPITAL A instead of saying “A”. Keep it to a decorative line, never a heading or a name anyone reads aloud.
Five capitals come from a different place
The alphabet is the Mathematical Fraktur block: 𝔄 at U+1D504, 𝔞 at U+1D51E. Five capitals are missing from it, because Unicode had already encoded them as mathematical symbols.
| Letter | Character | Codepoint |
|---|---|---|
| C | โญ | U+212D |
| H | โ | U+210C |
| I | โ | U+2111 |
| R | โ | U+211C |
| Z | โจ | U+2128 |
โ and โ are the standard signs for the imaginary and real parts of a complex number, which is how they were encoded first. Those five are drawn by a different part of the font from the other twenty-one, so blackletter capitals look mismatched more often than the rest.
What fraktur does not cover
- No digits. 0 to 9 pass through as ordinary figures.
- No accented letters. รก, รฑ and รผ stay plain beside the styled ones.
- Bold fraktur, on the fancy text generator, has no holes at all.
Gothic is not Gothic
Unicode reserves the name Gothic for the fourth-century alphabet Wulfila used for the Gothic language, at U+10330. A gothic text generator means blackletter, and that is Fraktur.
Before you paste it
These letters carry a compatibility mapping, so a system that normalizes input folds 𝔊 to G and โญ to C without telling you. They cannot be searched as ordinary text, and some sites refuse them in a name field, for the reasons on fonts for usernames. In Spanish: letras gรณticas.
