Superscript Generator
Type above and the letters lift above the line. Lowercase is almost complete and the digits are complete, but capitals cannot be produced at all, and one letter has nowhere to go.
These are characters, not formatting, which is why they survive a paste into a bio. It is also why a screen reader will not read them as ordinary letters, and why some sites refuse them in a name field.
Capitals cannot be done
Unicode never encoded a full superscript alphabet, and several capitals, C, F, Q, S, X, Y and Z among them, have no raised form in any block. Rather than leave a hole mid-word the tool lowercases everything first, so PhD comes back as ᵖʰᵈ. Superscript works on ordinary words and fails on acronyms and names.
q is the missing letter
Every other lowercase letter has a form that renders reliably. q does not, so it passes through at full size: quiet comes back as qᵘⁱᵉᵗ. Accents, punctuation and spaces are untouched too.
Where the letters actually come from
Mostly not from the block named after them. Only two come from Superscripts and Subscripts: ⁱ at U+2071 and ⁿ at U+207F, both encoded for mathematics. The other twenty-four are modifier letters meant to annotate pronunciation, not decorate text: eight from Spacing Modifier Letters, starting at ʰ U+02B0, the rest from Phonetic Extensions, starting at ᵃ U+1D43.
The digits are older than the letters
⁰ and ⁴ through ⁹ come from Superscripts and Subscripts, at U+2070 and U+2074 to U+2079. But ¹ ² and ³ come from Latin-1 Supplement, at U+00B9, U+00B2 and U+00B3, inherited from eight-bit sets that needed them for units and fractions, which is why they render almost everywhere and can look heavier inside one number.
Honest limits
- A screen reader announces MODIFIER LETTER SMALL A. A real footnote marker is a superscript element the reader understands; this is a lookalike with no meaning.
- Normalization folds ᵃ back to a and ² back to 2, so a field that tidies input keeps plain characters.
- Raised text cannot be searched as ordinary text.
