Small Caps Generator

Type above and your capitals shrink to small capitals. If what you wanted was tiny raised text, that is superscript and it lives on another page. Small caps sit on the line at lowercase height.

These are characters, not formatting, which is why they survive a paste into a bio. It is also why a screen reader will not read them as ordinary letters, and why some sites refuse them in a name field.

Two different things get called small text

Small capitals are capital letterforms at about the height of a lowercase x, sitting on the baseline: ᴛʜɪs ɪs sᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘs. Superscript is smaller again and raised: ᵗʰⁱˢ. If the raised version is what you came for, use the superscript generator, which has its own gaps and different ones.

This alphabet is a patchwork

There is no small capitals block. The letters were encoded one at a time for phonetic notation, so they come from three parts of Unicode:

  • IPA Extensions supplies ʙ U+0299, ɢ U+0262, ʜ U+029C, ɪ U+026A, ʟ U+029F, ɴ U+0274, ʀ U+0280 and ʏ U+028F.
  • Phonetic Extensions supplies ᴀ U+1D00 and most of the rest: ᴄ ᴅ ᴇ ᴊ ᴋ ᴍ ᴏ ᴘ ᴛ ᴜ ᴠ ᴡ ᴢ.
  • Latin Extended-D supplies one letter, ꜰ at U+A730.

They were added at different times for different purposes, so fonts draw them at slightly different weights and heights. The unevenness across a long word is real, not your screen.

Three letters are not small capitals at all

Letter You get Actually
Q ǫ U+01EB, an o with a tail, standing in
S s ordinary lowercase, left as typed
X x ordinary lowercase, left as typed

So ᴛᴇxᴛ and sɪx come back with a full-height letter in the middle. Digits and punctuation are left alone, and typing in capitals changes nothing: input is lowercased first, so ABC and abc give the same result.

Honest limits

A screen reader announces LATIN LETTER SMALL CAPITAL A, so this is a decorative bio line, never the substance of a post or a name. These letters carry no compatibility mapping, so they never fold back to plain text, which also means no search for the plain word matches them. In Spanish: letras pequeñas.
